Chandra: What path did you take to your current position?
Ed: I was initially trained as a biochemist. After college I spent nine years with the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) doing traditional sales and marketing in Uganda and Kenya. I moved to the U.S. in 2009 and went to graduate school in Seattle for business. One day, our instructor, a former Microsoft employee, told us about the business model behind pay-per-click (PPC) in relation to Google’s AdWords. I realized PPC was but a part of the wider digital marketing industry, and that most businesses were increasing their marketing focus on digital channels. It was fascinating. I learned that digital marketing had the potential to solve John Wanamaker’s classic conundrum when he said “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.” From there I made the decision to pivot my career into digital marketing. I completed the Advanced Online Marketing program at the University of Washington, and then volunteered for several months with the mobile team at World Vision, a global nonprofit based in the Seattle area. The training and hands-on work experience deepened my understanding of the core principles of digital marketing. From there, I came to Point It.
Chandra: Why did you choose Point It?
Ed: While I was at the University of Washington, Point It was mentioned in very glowing terms in one of my classes. I researched the company further, and discovered that not only was Point It a U.S. Search Award winner and listed as one of Inc.’s 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies, but also the company had a tremendously talented staff and top-tier clients, including Microsoft.
Chandra: What are you most excited about in your new role?
Ed: Several things excite me about working at Point It, but two things quickly come to mind. First, it’s an honor to be working with such smart, talented digital marketers – and among them, many industry-recognized award winners. Secondly, I appreciate the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, with campaigns that range from regional to national and even global. One moment, I’m optimizing ads for the Midwest audience for a national client, and the next a major PPC promotion is being launched in Europe for a global client.
Chandra: If someone wanted to follow in your footsteps, what piece of advice would you offer them?
I would say this is a great time to join the world of digital marketing. Have an open mind, and be ready to learn and adopt quickly because the industry is changing rapidly. That means there will never be a boring moment in your work life. One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was from a cardiologist in Nairobi named Dr. Warshow. He told me, “If you focus intently on something you really want, you will eventually get it, even if it takes a long time.” It’s a lesson that has reaped tremendous benefits in my life, and I think it’s great advice for everyone, regardless of their goals in life.
